The network of parks and natural areas corresponds to a set of public spaces for citizens' use that complete cities green belt. This network has an important role in the connexion of small squares and urban gardens with large natural systems. They are very worthy places for both their natural, environmental and landscape values, and their social function as well.
Parks, beaches and river spaces
Currently, the metropolitan parks network consists of 34 parks spread over 25 municipalities, with a total area of 200 ha. Since its inception, during the 1970s, the network has kept growing.
Depending on their origin and status, parks are classified as parks integrated to urban centres, parks associated to forest areas, and historical and botanical gardens. The Botanical Garden of Barcelona is a place of reference and experimentation that moves the obtained results to the whole metropolitan parks network.
Apart from the parks belonging to the metropolitan network, there are other parks managed at municipal level. The AMB is involved in many of these projects contained in its investment plan, and works coordinated with municipal services.
Green network management devolves, in many cases, upon the consortia of natural areas, organisations with important background knowledge, gathering the experience of the major agencies involved.
