Description

In the context of the armed conflict in Syria, local institutions in northern and eastern Syria (NES) are working to protect and guarantee human rights.

The main objectives of the project were to:

 - Strengthen the capacities of local authorities in the management of health care waste.

Work was carried out based on a two-pronged approach: on the one hand, the Kurdish Red Crescent and the Department of Health was supported in its work to consolidate the sanitary waste segregation system already in place in four health centres, and to extend it to ten other health facilities in Qamishli, Al-Hasakah and Amuda. Work was also done with the Department of Municipal Affairs and Environment of the Jazira region to reinforce the implementation of the sanitary waste transport and disposal system in the sanitary waste zones (SWZs) built in Qamishli and Al-Hasakah.

- Enhance the skills of municipal staff in programming solid waste recycling.

Work was done with the local authorities and existing local projects were promoted with a circular economy perspective.

The responsible local institutions enhanced their capacities to guarantee environmental and health rights through the project. The help was focused on municipalities in northern and eastern Syria and stakeholders in the healthcare sector in the Jazira region (al-Hasaka governorate) responsible for ensuring environmental protection.

The project worked with a focus on rights, gender, diversity, sustainability and governance, which are all prerequisites for ensuring a positive impact on the territory.
